Aspirant Directors – Talent Pool Offer
As part of the Aspire Together assessment process, the Midlands has established talent pools of aspirant directors assessed as ready now, ready soon and ready later. These pools comprise of individuals that have the behaviours, skills and aspirations to move to the next level in their career as a board level leader.
We’re working hard to build our support offer for Aspirant Directors in the Midlands Talent Pools to support them realise their career ambitions and our package of support includes the following:
Coaching and Mentoring
The Midlands Leadership Academy has a register of trained NHS coaches and you can register as a coachee here. Once registered, you will be able to view coaching profiles and select a preferred coach.
You can also access mentoring via the Academy, you can register as a mentee here. If you are an aspiring director and are unable to find a mentor suitable for your needs on the register, the Midlands Talent Team have a small number of executive director mentors. The Midlands Leadership and Lifelong Learning team, in partnership with the Midlands Talent Management team are currently hosting a Mentoring Skills Development Programme for Senior Leaders webinar series providing high quality mentoring skills development to senior leaders across health and care in the Midlands. Career Development Workshops and Resources
New in 2021, we hosted a range of virtual career development workshops aimed at aspirant directors. These short and practical sessions focused on critical career management aspects including: interview skills for senior leaders; understanding your personal career ambitions; career stories from senior leaders and motivations to support progression and transitioning from deputy to executive board leader.
We will also be creating a range of career management resources so that you can reflect upon your career aspirations and plans in a time most convenient for you.

Midlands and East Executive Talent Scheme
The Midlands and East Executive Talent Pool scheme was launched in 2017. The aim of the scheme is a simple one: we want to develop a diverse talent pool of individuals who can be appointed into executive-level posts in providers across the Midlands and East region, on either a stretch assignment or secondment basis with a support package supporting career development.
The scheme was paused during COVID and plans are underway to re-launch the scheme in early 2022. To find out more, click here.
Executive Director Pathway Scheme
This new national scheme aims to support the career development of those aspirant directors in regional ready now and ready soon talent pools in five uni professions:
• Nursing
• Medical
• Chief Operating Officer
• Workforce/HR
• Finance
It will run for 12-24 months and will adopt a 70/20/10 approach – 70% on the job learning via stretch assignment, 20% informal learning via coaching, mentoring and action learning and 10% classroom learning delivered through masterclasses and workshops.

Networking and Action Learning Sets
We will run networking and action learning sets events Midlands talent pool members. These events will feature speakers sharing their career stories, practical career management advice, national and regional updates and most importantly, a chance to connect with your peers across the Midlands region to support and learn from each other via action learning. We have a talent pool of aspirant directors who have been assessed as ready now to step into executive director roles.

Talent Management Support to Systems and Organisations
We will work collaboratively with systems and organisations to facilitate innovation and improvement in talent management.
Details of how we will do that and the activity that will underpin it is summarised below.
Communities of Practice for Systems and Organisations
We plan to host up to four Community of Practice Sessions per year for system and organisation leads that have responsibility talent management. These facilitated sessions will provide a platform for peers to exchange ideas, share case studies, collaborate and gain knowledge. Dates for these sessions to be confirmed shortly.

Develop Talent Management Practitioner Capability
Working with our national colleagues, we will continue to support the development of talent management capability through sharing learning, hosting masterclasses and designing resources to support effective talent management practice.
Our second Talent Management Inclusive Masterclass took place on the 28th April and we were delighted to be joined by Jennifer Izekor, Founder and CEO of Above Difference where she presented on Recruiting and Promoting BAME Leaders Inclusively with Cultural Intelligence. Talent Management Toolkit and Resources
A whole host of tools, resources and templates have been developed to support talent management practitioners to embed successful talent management culturally and operationally. These include talent review templates and guidance, strategy templates, slide packs to engage board leaders and line managers and much much more.

Talent Management Case Studies and Innovation
If you have a story or a case study to share that demonstrates how your organisation or system have implemented great talent management practice, we’d love to hear about it.
Our aim moving forward will be to act as conduit for the region to share great practice to support the spread, adoption and dissemination of innovation.

NHS Employers on behalf of NHSEI undertook a recent Inclusive Recruitment and Promotion Practices Case Study. This includes numerous case studies from NHS and non NHS organisations showcasing innovation in inclusive talent management practice and the impact of these approaches.
