Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS)

The multi award winning NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) offers its trainees the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to become proficient leaders of transformation who can manage the balance between access and affordability. We work closely with the National Leadership and Lifelong Learning Team to deliver this scheme across the Midlands, taking the lead on ensuring placements are of the highest quality and provide a fantastic experience for trainees.

Interested in helping our graduates gain experience?

It is our job as a Regional Leadership and Lifelong Learning team to manage placements, local networking and training. Whilst on the scheme each trainee will complete at least two work-based placements within local organisations, gaining experience as well as providing a valuable contribution to the organisation. .

We are now accepting applications to host GMTS trainees from our September 2024 cohort. Systems, Integrated Care Boards, Trusts and organisations running NHS services are encouraged to apply.

Trainees undertake two placements in NHS organisations as well as studying for post-graduate qualifications over the course of 2-2.5 years.

The application process is similar to last year involving two stages. Stage one application forms and guidance can be accessed through our website: GMTS Website – Assurance Guidance and Application Forms (the password is ‘GMTS’). The application questions align with our Quality Standards Framework, which has been co-produced with stakeholders and is to be used as the basis of an accreditation process that is in development.

Within their placements, trainees must work towards meeting competencies relevant to their specialism; these competencies are available below:

General Management

Finance

Human Resources

Health Analysis

Health Informatics

Policy and Strategy

The deadline for applications is Friday 2nd February 2024. Please return completed forms to your regional GMTS team at [email protected]

We will be running a number of information sessions in the coming months. These will provide an overview of the requirements for hosting a GMTS trainee and the application process. They are open to all organisations and systems running NHS services. Please contact us at [email protected] for registration links or more information.

Interested in being a trainee?

As a trainee on the scheme, you’ll need to be enthusiastic, innovative, passionate and motivated about improving patient care.  In return, you will benefit from mentoring, support and excellent training. You’ll experience life-defining moments and have influence over decisions that improve the lives of millions. After completion of the scheme, you’ll be able to boost your career even further and apply for senior NHS roles.

Trainees specialise in either:

  • General management
  • Finance management
  • HR Management
  • Informatics management
  • Health Analysis management
  • Policy and Strategy

The scheme is full time for 2-3 years, depending on specialism and you will rotate between full time work placements, postgraduate education and leadership development. The next GMTS intake is scheduled for September 2023, though please do note that applications for this intake are now closed.

The scheme is recruited to and led by the NHS Leadership and Lifelong Learning team, which is part of the People Directorate in NHS England and Improvement.

GMTS Programme and Placement Manager Training

The NHS GMTS Team are delivering a series of training sessions aimed at current and prospective GMTS Programme and Placement Managers.

These short sessions will provide an insight to the Graduate Management Training Scheme, the journey of the trainee and the roles and expectations of Programme and Placement Managers. They will also cover basics such as how to use the online trainee management tool GENI and give individuals an opportunity to ask questions about executing their role. All Managers will benefit from the session, learning how to effectively support and develop their trainees throughout their time on the scheme.

The sessions will run regularly online over the course of the year to enable new placement and programme managers the chance to familiarise themselves with key aspects of their responsibilities.
