The Healthcare Leadership Model for health has been developed to create a vision for leadership, one that reflects the very best in care and compassion, alongside a focus on excellent in strategy, vision, direction and engagement.
How is the model used?
The model describes what good leaders do, and it will help you develop as a leader by showing you how your leadership behaviours affect the culture and climate you, your colleagues and teams work in. Whether you work directly with patients and service users or not, you will realise what you do and how you behave will affect the experience of patients and service users of your organisation, the quality of care provided and the reputation of the organisation itself.
360° Degree Feedback
360°-degree feedback is a powerful tool that is linked to the nine dimensions of the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model. The tool is an opportunity and a means of enabling you to identify where your leadership strengths and development needs lie by receiving objective feedback from a trained facilitator. A 360° report is compiled using confidential ratings given by your line manager, peers and direct reports,’ giving you an insight into other people’s perceptions of your leadership abilities and behaviours and helping you to identify your developmental needs and action planning around it.
Next steps
Once you have explored the dimensions, you may want to undertake the free self-assessment tool, which will help you to assess your leadership behaviours and more fully understand your leadership development. Alternatively, why not undertake a full 360°degree feedback opportunity, which would include the support of an experienced feedback facilitator to explore and understand the 360° report. These cost £40 each and would need to be funded by yourself, or by your organisation.

Updates from National HLM team below
Call out for Facilitators – Apprenticeships Team
The NHS Leadership Academy have been working to extend the reach of their core national leadership programmes in line with the NHS People Plan by allowing access to the programmes via apprenticeships. This led to the launch of several apprenticeship cohorts of the Mary Seacole Programme with further upscaling planned in 2022.
As part of the Mary Seacole Programme participants are required to complete a HLM 360 and receive feedback from an accredited facilitator. With the introduction of apprenticeship cohorts of the programme the number of facilitators required has increased and therefore we are asking for your help.
We are looking for facilitators to volunteer to undertake virtual feedback sessions with apprenticeship cohort participants in January / February 2022. If you think you may be able to help please email [email protected]
Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer some time, we appreciate that services are stretched at the moment and capacity is limited.

HLM Observations App
The Healthcare Leadership Model Observations app allows you to record observations about the leadership behaviours that you see around you, helping you explore those behaviours using the dimensions of the Healthcare Leadership Model.
You can add in your own reflections, save and revisit your entries, set goals and reminders and download a summary PDF report for your programme or portfolio. The app can also be used for recording and reflecting on your own leadership behaviours.
It’s ideal for your own leadership practice and for those you come into contact with as a 360 Feedback Facilitator.
