SUMMARY:Black\, Asian and Ethnic Minority Primary Care Sponsorship Programme
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Black\, Asian or Minority Ethnic woman in Primary Care who is committed to developing their career and leadership potential? \nOr are you a leader in Primary\, Secondary or Social Care who wants to recognise and support the potential of BAME women\, create more equity in career progression and develop yourself as an inclusive leader? You will learn how to use your connections and influence to actively support your sponsees career development. This could include helping your sponsee extend their network\, make connections\, identify opportunities and personally advocating for them. \nBackground \nThe Black\, Asian and Ethnic Minority Primary Care Sponsorship programme is being delivered in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ambitions of the Long-Term Plan and NHS People Plan. Throughout the pandemic\, leaders have had to operate beyond their comfort zone. Leaders at all levels have risen to the challenge in what has been an unprecedented year for the NHS. We need to recognise this talent; unleash their potential and we can do this through the power of sponsorship. For this to be effective\, individuals need to be upskilled in the delivery of sponsorship-led interventions. For example: developing their leadership capabilities as sponsors who are compassionate\, inclusive and distributive; to support innovation\, new ways of working and sustainability; and support them in developing behaviours that enable them to deal with issues of equality\, diversity and inclusion\, particularly in the current context. \nAcross the NHS in the Midlands\, too few BAME women are reaching senior leadership positions at the very top of their organisations.  A significant reason for this is that they are not getting the high-profile leadership and learning opportunities that are often the steppingstone into more senior roles. \nInclusion is a complex issue\, with women and people from minority backgrounds experiencing a wide range of systemic progression challenges. These barriers stem from unequal power structures\, unconscious bias and a lack of formal support. \n11 ICS areas across the Midlands are committed to addressing the lack of representation of female BAME leaders (predominantly from Primary Care settings) through a proactive and ground-breaking sponsorship programme. \nAbout the programme \nThere will be a programme welcome call w/c 7th April 2022 and the programme will launch on 12th May. Sponsors and sponsees will be matched and meet monthly over the course of 1 year. \nYou will be supported by a series of online facilitated workshops and access to leadership development courses to develop your sponsorship ability and leadership potential. \nBenefits for sponsees and sponsors \n\nA strong and supportive network of peers\, role models and senior sponsors\nUnderstanding how to achieve career development and progression through effective networking\, visibility and active sponsorship\nTangible career and development plan\nIncreased confidence in your own leadership style and empowerment to pursue leadership opportunities\nPractical tools to enhance your leadership and your resilience\nUnderstanding how to become better allies for diversity and inclusion\, and influence a more inclusive culture and behaviours at work.\n\nBenefits for Primary Care in the Midlands \n\nPromote retention and progression of BAME women\, who are under-represented in leadership roles\nAddress population health inequalities by ensuring diversity in decision-making roles\nBuild a more diverse and inclusive workforce in which contributions from all staff members are valued is directly linked to good patient care.\n\nExpressions of Interest \nExpressions of interest in participating in this programme should be completed by 28th March 2022 and we will then contact you to discuss this with you. \nWho can attend the programme? \nMidlands NHS staff from Primary\, Secondary and Social Care \nIs there a cost to participants? \nNo\, the programme is fully funded by NHS England and NHS Improvement \nHow is it run? \nThis will be run via Teams and Zoom\, and please put the session dates in your calendar.  Please note these sessions may be recorded. \n  \n\n\n\nWorkshop\n Audience\nWorkshop overview\nTiming\n\n\nWelcome\nAll\nPurpose & overview of the programme \nWhat’s expected of sponsors and sponsees \nOpportunity to ask questions\n2-4.30pm \n7th April\n\n\nHow allyship plays a part in sponsorship\nAll\nSharing best practice and examples of good sponsorship \nUnpacking Allyship & sponsorship \nGuest speaker such as Yvonne Coghill\n2-4pm Thursday \n12th May\n\n\nUnderstanding self as a leader and impact on others\nSponsors\nHow you can empower others as a leader \nHow to actively sponsor \nProviding access to a supportive network of peers and role models\n2-4pm \n9th June\n\n\nFinding your voice and understanding self as a leader and impact on others\nSponsees\nUnderstanding how to achieve career development and progression through effective networking\, visibility and active sponsorship \nHow you can empower others and feel empowered yourself as a leader \nProviding access to a supportive network of peers and role models\n2-4pm \n23rd June\n\n\nShining spotlight\nSponsors\nWhat difference has your sponsorship made? \nWhat have you learned as an inclusive  leader? \nHow to create visibility for\, and amplify the voice of\, your sponsee\n2-4pm \n8th September\n\n\nMid term  check in\nAll\nChecking in on the sponsor/sponsee relationship – how is it going? \nEngage with and share lived experiences – safe spaces for challenging\, honest conversations around inclusion\, bias\, race and gender \nUnderstanding how to become better allies for diversity and inclusion\, and influence a more inclusive culture and behaviours at work.\n2-4pm \n22nd September\n\n\nInfluencing and negotiating\nSponsees\n·Understanding and practicing a framework of different push and pull influencing styles\n2-4pm \n20th October\n\n\nCommunication and dealing with conflict\nSponsees\nHow to ensure the right information is received and actively listen to really understand the other person. \nCultural intelligence\n2-4pm \n24th November \n \n\n\nWellbeing & resilience\nSponsees\nHelp talented BAME women to stay resilient\, authentic\, and effective leaders in the face of systemic obstacles \nDevelop empathy\, understanding and a shared narrative around the nature of inclusion and how it can be fostered.\n26th January 2023\n\n\nCelebration Event\n All\nCelebrate the experience and outcomes of the programme: for individuals and the system\n1-4pm \n23rd March 2023\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:From intention to impact – Supporting the development of inclusive recruitment and nurturing our talent -  Eliminating bias in the recruitment process
DESCRIPTION:Last year systems submitted plans on how they will meet the 6 recruitment high impact actions for diverse appointments.  These submitted plans were reviewed by the regional workforce team and the outcomes of that review was shared through 2 regional engagement workshops with our system and organisational colleagues.  As result of the sessions key themes emerged. \n brap (www.brap.org.uk) is supporting the Midlands NHSEI Equality & Inclusion Team by facilitating four thematic sessions to enable professionals to explore their workforce recruitment practices.  The four themes are: \n\nidentifying talent\,\nadvertising roles\,\neliminating bias in the recruitment process\, and\nsupporting retention and progression.\n\nThese sessions will be an opportunity to review strategies and interventions\, further our understanding of the evidence base\, and think through actions that can be more impactful. \nWe intend to have a final session in September (date to be confirmed nearer the time) to exchange knowledge and learning from the four sessions. \nThe sessions will therefore be run under Chatham House rules\, and participants will be invited to be open and honest so that we can expand our collective expertise. Most importantly we want to be able to move into a space where more informed action can support a more inclusive workforce. \nFurther Dates and times of sessions: \nTuesday\, 24 May 2022 from 1.30pm to 16.30 – Identifying talents  \nMonday\, 6 June 2022  from 9.30am to 12.30 –  Supporting retention and progression \n  \nWho’s this session for?  \n\nSystem Workforce Leads\nHR Colleagues (Recruitment Leads)\nTalent Leads\nEDI Leads\n\nWe would like for each of our systems within the Region to make an active participation and contribution. Therefore\, we encourage attendance at all four sessions from our 11 ICS’s. \n  \nTo book  \nEach session will focus on an aspect of the recruitment process\, as described above\, although there will be some inevitable overlap. \nTo book onto the sessions\, please click on the RSVP section below. \nPlease note that that you will receive joining instructions and a link to the session a few days before each of the events.  Therefore\, we advise you to put a hold in your diaries.
