Leadership Development for New GP’s



This programme is being delivered in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ambitions of the recently published NHS People Plan. With a growing population and people living longer, often with long-term conditions, and health inequalities, the demand on local health services is ever-increasing. To meet this increased demand, Primary Care Networks [PCNs] are to become the building blocks to every Integrated Care System [ICS], allowing community, mental health, social care, hospital and voluntary services to work together to enable greater personalised, compassionate, inclusive, coordinated and integrated health and social care. This system will require a different way of working, different relationships and new roles for general practice and primary care.

In a climate where demand is outstripping supply and staff in General Practice face very heavy workloads, it is vital that everyone is working at their full potential and delivering what is required for the practice and the wider system. This short and impactful programme creates an environment where new GPs to practice can come and share their experiences of where there are challenges and opportunities and be supported to learn new skills for easing them into managing themselves and others even better.  This is particularly important where new GPs have no direct lines of management, they have a need for their voices to be heard in practice and in the wider system.

Day 1: Thursday 25th Feb 2021

9.15am – 4.00pm

Workshop 1. GP Leader as Coach (an introduction) – Inclusive, compassionate and collaborative mindset and skills for leading, managing and influencing others often where there are no direct lines of management, inside of the practice and in the wider system.

The first workshop participants will learn how to be a collaborative, inclusive and compassionate leader by skilling up with some of the must-know, fundamental and empowering coaching skills and techniques, along with the theories that underpin GPs to enable them to collaborate and include others. This along with ‘lightening the load’ of work, managing themselves more effectively and learning the art of when and how to stop saying yes!

Day 2: Thursday 25th March 2021

9.15am – 4.00pm

Workshop 2.  GPs ‘Getting the most from others’ – Coach Approach Skills Development (managing and extending performance, building on Day 1)

Workshop 2 will include equipping participants with skills to enable practice staff, peers and colleagues to perform at their best, holding them to account and managing difficult conversations about expectations when things are not going well. It is important that conversations with practice staff, peers and others outside of the practice are managed well and relationships are protected.

Is there a cost to participate in the Programme?

No, the Programme is fully funded by the NHS England & NHS Improvement.

Do we need to attend the 2 days of the Programme?

Yes, but there are occasions where we accept apologies, for example for not attending due to unforeseen/unexpected important events.

Who can attend the webinar?

Any GP who works in Midlands primary care

How can I register an interest in the programme?

Deadline to register for a place on the programme is 14 January 2021

Programme places will be confirmed by 20 January 2021

Please note:

Places are limited to 18 and we expect to be oversubscribed.

Applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis.

Places will be allocated equally across the Midlands.
