Health Inequalities by David Clutterbuck: The leader as a developer of talent
The challenges of effective health service leadership demand a skill set that leaders have typically not been exposed to in their careers so far. More complex, constantly shifting environments require new, more flexible, more systemic ways of thinking and engaging with colleagues. Making effective use of talent is one of the core competences of modern leadership. Today’s NHS leaders need to be both champions of diversity and role models for leveraging diversity. This series of five masterclasses aim to equip leaders with an understanding of the issues, greater self-awareness and a practical toolkit they can apply as needed. Subject expert David Clutterbuck will be facilitate these sessions and they are designed to build on the learning and application from the previous one. Relevant pre-reading and post-reading materials, including self-diagnostic tools will be provided.
The style will be highly interactive, using chat rooms, wordclouds, panel discussions and breakouts as appropriate with evidence-based, accessible and highly practicable content – it is essential that participants are able to apply learning rapidly in their normal working practice. Participants will also have free access to the Coaching and Mentoring Resource – an online platform of practical briefings – for one year.
This module draws upon extensive studies of how effective leaders develop the talent in their teams. It starts from a recognition that talent comes in many forms. The role of a leader is to recognise it, nurture it and enable people to apply it for the benefit of patients and the organisation. The content includes:
- Why historic approaches to talent identification don’t work (linear versus systemic thinking)
- How to help direct reports take greater accountability for their own self-development and career management
- How to recognise when people outgrow their current job role
- How to hold a powerful developmental conversation
- How to work with strengths and weaknesses
- How to develop your own emotional intelligence and that of your team members
Date and Time:
